U.S. Thanksgiving Box Office Soars to Record-Breaking $422M Over 5 Days

A historic milestone for the movie industry as the Thanksgiving stretch is bringing in an astounding $422 million at the domestic box office.

Adam Aron, CEO of AMC Theatres, highlights the increase in audience interest by calling this weekend’s movie attendance “a national phenomenon.”

The total for all films from Wednesday through Sunday has surpassed the previous Thanksgiving record of $315.6 million, which was set in 2018 when Ralph Breaks the Internet set a new box office record.

With a strong lineup of much-awaited films, industry insiders had long predicted a notable uptick in moviegoing during the post-COVID, post-strike period.

The resurgence in interest has been aided by Paramount’s Gladiator II, Universal’s Wicked, and Disney’s Moana 2. The box office is expected to hit an amazing $681.5 million in the ten days since Wicked and Gladiator 2 opened on Friday, November 22.

With an anticipated five-day opening of between $215M and $220M, Moana 2 is breaking all previous records and becoming the most successful Thanksgiving release.

With $263 million to date with the third-best five-day Thanksgiving total of $118 million, Wicked has emerged as the highest-grossing movie based on a Broadway musical.

Gladiator II, a big adult audience favourite, is expected to earn $45 million by the end of the holiday weekend.

These numbers show that the American box office has triumphantly returned to its previous level of performance, highlighting the Christmas season’s continued attraction for blockbuster films.
