Christmas Time: Examining the Previous Year and Anticipating this Season

Christmas season is here again, and as the season draws near with its cosiness and festive lights, I can’t help but reflect on the previous year.

Another fast-paced year has been marked by a lot of events, both joyful and turbulent, in Nigeria in particular. Even though it feels like Christmas was yesterday, another year is concluding.

The speed at which time flies is astounding. As a spectator, I have heard, seen, and felt the pulse of this year in Nigeria, where resilience is a part of daily life.

Looking back, I am struck by how much has changed in such a short time, and looking forward to this year’s festivities is a time for reflection, remembering, revived passion and plans for the future.

A Year of Global Shift

Christmas

Throughout 2023, nations faced energy issues, inflation, conflict, and rising costs, causing global economic tensions to endure. These global shifts have an influence on our daily lives here in Nigeria.

The growing cost of food, fuel, and other needs serves as a reminder that global concerns do not occur in isolation but affect all corners of the world. I felt the weight of these transformations at various periods during the past year.

It can be difficult to keep up with the constant growth of the tools and technology we use on a daily basis. The way automation and artificial intelligence are shaping our future is both exhilarating and dangerous. It reminds me of the world we once imagined in books and movies, which is now gradually becoming a reality.

Focus on Nigeria: A Year of Struggles and Gains

Nigeria has seen dramatic change in the last 12 months. Since last Christmas, a number of important events have occurred in our nation, some of which have tested our resilience and others of which have been heartening.

The elections that were held last year marked a dramatic shift. When Nigerians voted, they did so with the expectation of a brighter future and a new beginning. A feeling that change was not only possible but also achievable dominated the air. The results, however, elicited conflicting responses. Some were happy, but others weren’t sure whether the change we’ve been hoping for will actually happen.

One of the most obvious and immediate effects of the new administration was the elimination of the fuel subsidy, which caused fuel prices to soar overnight, affecting almost every aspect of daily life, including transportation and food prices. Nigerians had to adjust to this new reality before Christmas, as daily expenses felt higher.

Every time I went to the market, I was struck by the constant rise in food costs. My group began to discuss more about saving and budgeting as we all sought to find out how to deal with the new economic reality.

The volatility of the Naira added an extra layer of complexity. Every time I checked, the money appeared to have changed, typically in a bad way. However, Nigerians understand how to adjust.

Despite the hardships, I observed communities and families band together to discover resilience and strength in solidarity, resulting in a great Christmas celebration. That component of our character has always stood out to me, and it feels more strong than ever as we approach Christmas.

Personal Reflection: My Christmas Experiences and Where I Went

Christmas

Last Christmas, I had moved to a new city and had a lot of work-related engagements and couldn’t travel home for the break. I had thought I could have some alone time and just be grateful to God for the past months.

Unfortunately, my alone time didn’t go so well and I ended up missing home, the merriments, the family and friend picnic, and the edibles.

I remember being grateful for life’s small pleasures, knowing that not everyone had been fortunate to enjoy a peaceful and pleasant Christmas like I had in the past. Life has sped up as normal since then, and I’ve discovered how important it is to acknowledge those fleeting moments of joy and I intend to have a better Christmas this year.

Christmas Plans for 2024: Hopes for the Season

As Christmas approaches, I’m looking forward to taking things slow, savouring the festive spirit, and spending time with loved ones.

Christmas in Nigeria has a special beauty, with streets decked up in decorations, songs filling the air, and a spirit of gladness and camaraderie that brings people together.

This year, I want to keep it simple and focus on the connection, appreciation, and contemplation that are the true spirit of the Christmas season.

I’m delighted to eat traditional foods, share tales with loved ones, and perhaps even contribute in some little manner through giving. It feels natural to greet the Christmas spirit with a heart full of appreciation and optimism after a year of highs and lows.
